Chaperone Policy

A chaperone is a person who is an impartial observer, and will be a health care assistant, or a nurse who has undergone appropriate training and is familiar with general practice policies and procedures. They will be available to reassure you, and raise any concerns on your behalf.

For your comfort and safety, certain examinations during appointments will be attended by a chaperone.

Additionally, if you would like a chaperone to be present during your entire appointment, please advise the receptionist/staff when checking in for your visit.

As per Clinic policy, a chaperone cannot be a person who is a family member or a friend attending with you.

You are free to decline any examination or choose an alternative chaperone. You may also request a chaperone for any examination or appointment if one is not offered to you. The GP/doctor may not undertake certain examinations if a chaperone is declined.

The presence, absence and/or refusal of a chaperone will be documented in your confidential medical notes.

The role of a chaperone is to:

  • Assist in the examination.
  • Maintain professional boundaries during intimate examinations.
  • Acknowledge a patient’s vulnerability.
  • Provide emotional comfort and reassurance.
  • Assist with undressing patients, if required
